DEBORAH BITTENDENDER

Deborah Bittender has been an educator for over 45 years.  She has a BA from Belmont Abbey (Formerly Sacred Heart College) in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education.   She also has a MA in Literacy and Reading for Dowling College and an MA Educational Leadership from Adelphi University.  Deb has also completed all the coursework for a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. The current status is All but dissertation (ABD). Deb has classroom experience at all levels from Pre-school through college with the exception of high school.

She began her teaching career in Hampton, Va serving mostly military children for the first thirteen years of teaching.  In 1985 she moved to New York teaching at a private kindergarten for four years before becoming part of the NYS public school system.  She taught in the Rockville Centre district for 11 years with the last four years as a reading specialist.  She designed a guided reading program that became a district-wide program the year she left.  Simultaneously Deb began to also teach at the college level as an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University teaching teachers how to teach reading. In 2000 Deb moved to upstate New York. She was hired as a reading teacher for Sherburne-Earlville School District where she remained until 2012, While at Sherburne-Earlville Deb specialized in student data analysis to inform teaching across the sixth, seventh and eighth grades in all disciplines. She continued teaching at the college level teaching at the SUNY at Cortland.  Deb also taught for the University of Phoenix online teaching in the teacher education program at the graduate level. In addition to creating a guided reading program, Deb did staff development at her own district and outside districts teaching Reading techniques, assessment, and curriculum alignment.
