In the midst of all the chaos in your mind & all of the disorganization, & all the trouble getting started, & procrastination, your brain just thinks a little bit differently. And you can come up with things.” - David Neeleman (He has ADHD & is former CEO of Jet Blue)

WHAT YOU’LL FIND

Those with ADHD excel in some areas, and totally flunk in others.

You may be naturally gifted. For example, at art, math, music, design, sports, etc.

You may appear inattentive at times.

Educators and parents wonder if you’re smart, slow, or just ‘choose’ not to pay attention.

People don’t understand that ADHD does not equal stupid; that you can struggle to start, stay focused, and finish a project.

You might hyperfocus sometimes, at other times focus on the wrong things or ‘go down rabbit holes’.

WHY YOU STRUGGLE TO GET THINGS DONE

Some things are boring, or feel like a waste of time, making it difficult to pay attention.

A natural understanding of the big picture means unexpected leaps in intuition making it hard to work on details.

People with ADHD know the wonder and potential of life and hate boring activities.

Some things are overwhelming due to increased sensitivity and awareness. This means the brain forgets stuff, gets scattered, can’t focus, or shuts down.

HOW TO GET THINGS DONE

  • The calmer life is, the better. With less stress, your brain works well and it’s easier to get things done.
  • The more organized your environment, the easier it is to work since you can think more clearly.
  • The happier you are, the easier it is to accomplish goals. Happiness increases endorphins and makes the brain work better!
  • Friends make your social life better and their support will help you excel.
  • Come here for support and join the tribe!
  • Know you have help in your life, not just panic.

THE POWER OF GETTING STARTED

  • There’s rarely a good time to start. Sit down and begin. Writers, (even me writing this) must literally sit, breathe, and let it flow.
  • Set a timer for 30 minutes.
  • If you totally freeze, get up and leave, don’t flog yourself for failure. In this case, the question ISN’T how can I force myself to do this, but instead, ‘why am I so panicky?’
  • The difference here is self-love and self-kindness instead of self-flagellation. You’ll find the kinder you are to yourself, the easier it is to concentrate.
  • Know you have control in your life.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW!

Overcoming boredom

  • Get a piece of paper and make a list of the things that bore you
  • Make a list of the activities you enjoy.
  • Take 2 items from each list.
  • Write down the steps to complete boring tasks.
  • Notice how you complete the activities you enjoy and see how you can apply these principles to boring tasks.

Sit and begin something you’ve been putting off

  • Set a timer for just 15 minutes.
  • Begin imperfectly.
  • See what happens

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” - Robert Fulghum
