BUSY HANDS:

  • Help calm with creativity. The shower is the best example of this. Who doesn’t have great ideas in the shower!
  • Some people even keep a chalkboard in the shower stall to capture these thoughts as they happen.
  • Fidget spinners, jigsaw puzzles, playing with a bead necklace, a zipper, are all ways to help calm the mind and stimulate creativity.

CHEWING:

  • Although there’s a reason that people CHEW on a toothpick or a piece of grass in the movies whilst looking out over a vast landscape, if you Google how many hospital visits are due to accidental toothpick consumption, the picture looks way less cool!
  • So chew on gum or something safe, if it helps!

SMELL:

  • Certain smells can be transformative.
  • Most people know the tranquility of lavender, the vibrancy of citrus, the calm of a forest.
  • It isn’t just the smell, but the essence of the goodness of the plant or herb itself, that is transformative.
  • Please contact us if you’d like to learn more about plants and essential oils; we have a department specifically dedicated to this (including the music of the plants developed in Italy).

EXERCISE.

  • Need we say more? To pacify those with hyperactivity, both mind and body need to be calmed, often many times a day.
  • If exercising coincides with the great outdoors, it’s extra beneficial, since nature grounds and rejuvenates.

YOGA and TAI CHI:

  • Are known to be exceptionally beneficial for ADHD. Accessing the body in this way, helps the calm the mind.
  • A calm mind helps the body relax, but it works the other way too; a relaxed body helps the mind calm.

ROCKING:

  • Rocking is a form of self-soothing.
  • Restless legs release stress and anxiety.
  • Self-soothing is healthy and to be encouraged. It’s important the child has these outlets, rather than internalizing emotions. (It’s also vital to address the anxiety).

DIET:

  • Notice if chemically dyed candy, caffeine, or processed foods affect you (or your child)
  • Those with ADHD often have very pure physiology and are as sensitive inside as out.
  • The more natural the food, the healthier the person.
  • Keep a journal on problem foods: what sends you orbiting and which foods calm, bearing in mind that your emotional state will impact on your digestion also.

Don’t try to force anything. Let life be a deep let-go. God opens millions of flowers every day without forcing their buds.” - Osho

Sometimes, struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were to go through our life without any obstacles, we would be crippled. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. Give every opportunity a chance, leave no room for regrets.” - Friedrich Nietzsche
